It is my unfortunate duty to report that on September 4, 2004, our classmate 2nd LT. Brett Johnson Harman, USMC, 23, of Park Ridge Ill., was fatally shot and killed while tailgating before the North Carolina State University's season opening football game against Richmond. Brett was an Infantry Officer stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. Prior to the start of the N.C. State football game, Brett and a close friend, Kevin, became involved in a confrontation with two individuals who were driving recklessly through their tailgating area. After driving off, both disgruntled individuals returned to the football game and shot and killed 2nd LT. Brett Johnson Harman, USMC, and Kevin M. McCann of Chicago prior to the start of the game. Brett Harman will surely be missed and remembered by the friends and family of the class of 2003. If anyone feels compelled to submit a farewell note or dedicate an article to the memory of 2nd LT. Brett Johnson Harman, please do not hesitate to contact any class officers or send an email to the class hotmail account.
To the Harman Family, on behalf of the Class of 2003, we are terribly sorry for your loss and our prayers are with you in your time of need. Brett's death was both unfortunate and unnecessary. His service and leadership as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps is greatly appreciated and will continue to be remembered. If you desire to contact any member of the class of 2003 or have any requests, please contact the class officers via navyclass2003@hotmail.com. Lets keep the Harman Family in our prayers and support one another in this time of sorrow. Stay focused and be careful out there. This months submission has been dedicated to the memory and friendship of 2nd LT. Brett Johnson Harman and to the Harman Family. All previously received unpublished Shipmate submissions will be printed in the December 2004 Shipmate edition. - Dan
