We're nearly halfway through our deployment here in Haditha, Iraq. We live in a hydroelectric dam, the same one that Mark Littell lived in when he deployed here a year ago. It's like living in Bancroft again, to get anywhere you have to take stairs. I'm rooming with 1st Lt Ed Malinowski ('02), the logistics alpha for our battalion. I picked up a CAAT platoon this time around after having a rifle platoon last year for Fallujah. Everything's pretty monotonous and dull here, which I have no complaints about. We have a bunch of grads in our battalion, a few of us were able to catch the Army/Navy game on AFN, we were all glad to see how the team did. I see a few faces here and there in Iraq; I ran into Edson Greenwood in an abandoned school in Barwanah. I lived in Pacific Beach before deploying and every weekend it was hard not to run across somebody; namely Joe Lavelle, and Jon Hiler or Jeremy Watkins always seemed to be stopping by from Hawaii. I'll be missing Tom Mancinelli's wedding, but I missed Kip Rainey's too, so much for roommate loyalty. I'll be back in April, then stick it out for one more deployment, we're slated for a MEU; as long as it's not another Iraq deployment I don't care, Afghanistan would be fun. Take care all. Jeff Sommers Marines.jpeg Brett Johnson Harman, Class of 2003, was killed in Raleigh, NC on September 4, 2004. He had completed TBS and IOC at Quantico and was stationed at Camp Lejeune. His memory has been honored in many ways. The wrestling room at his high school was dedicated as the Brett J. Harman Wrestling Center and his memorial funds purchased a new wrestling mat and singlets for the wrestling team with Brett's name on them. Brett J. Harman Scholarships will be awarded annually to deserving wrestlers from the high school. The United States Naval Academy founded a Brett J. Harman Award which will be given each year to the wrestler who best represents Brett's team spirit and positive attitude. Brett's class ring was given to the Navy Museum at the Academy. It will be in an exhibit of rings from every Academy class since 1869, and represents the Class of 2003. A book, Brett Remembered, was published in September, 2005. Brett's mother, Nancy Tighe, appreciates any contact from friends of Brett's at njti42@aol.com.
